European Photography Festivals to Watch This August

This August, several standout photography festivals are unfolding across Europe, offering plenty of inspiration for anyone drawn to the intersection of image, place, and memory — themes close to our own collective's heart.

Gibellina Photoroad (Sicily, Italy) — through September 6

Marking its tenth anniversary this year, this open-air festival transforms the Sicilian town of Gibellina into a sprawling outdoor exhibition, weaving contemporary photography, architecture, memory, and urban landscape together across the town's public squares and buildings. Rebuilt after a devastating 1968 earthquake, the town itself has become an unlikely canvas — and this year's centerpiece is a new site-specific installation by acclaimed Dutch artist Erik Kessels. It's an extraordinary example of photography used to reactivate collective memory in physical space — a philosophy that resonates deeply with how we think about documenting heritage and history through our History & Culture galleries.

PhEST (Southern Italy)

Now marking a decade, PhEST explores the interconnected identities of the Mediterranean through a mix of photography, film, music, and art. This year's edition turns to the theme "What If?" — treating the question as a tool for imagining alternate futures and making visible what doesn't yet exist. A compelling reminder that photography isn't only about documenting what's in front of us, but imagining what could be.

Worth Noting

Both festivals reflect something we deeply believe in at Bisotun Art Collective: that photography, at its best, is inseparable from the places and histories it grows out of.
