Environmental Portrait

True portraiture does not isolate a person; it documents the environment that shapes their entire existence. This collection focuses on the profound relationship between humanity, tradition, and geography.

A central narrative within this archive documents the epic seasonal migration (Kooch) of the Bakhtiari nomads. Tracking their brutal winter journeys through rugged terrain in search of pastures for their herds, these portraits capture a life lived on the move. From the rhythmic motion of horse-mounted herders to families navigating the harsh elements to sustain their ancestral way of life, these images capture the resilient spirit of a people permanently bound to the cycles of the earth.

The role of Qashqai women

Qashqai women are the backbone of tribal survival, balancing heavy labor with high social status:

Economic Drivers: Master weavers who create world-renowned carpets from memory, generating vital tribal income alongside managing wool and dairy production.

Logistical Experts: Partners in migration who ride, navigate mountain passes, and pitch heavy goat-hair tents.

Socially Independent: Unveiled and highly visible, they work openly and dress in iconic, vibrant, multi-layered silk skirts.

Cultural Guardians: The primary keepers of the Qashqai Turkic language, folklore, and nomadic identity.

While the ancient tradition of migrating with camels has largely gone extinct in Iran, a resilient few among the Shahsavan tribes still maintain this heritage along the foothills of Sabalan.

Echoes of  Uramanat: Childhood in the Kurdish Mountains

Photographer: Ali Azadeh

High in the rugged, UNESCO-listed landscape of Hawraman (Uramanat), where villages cling to steep mountain slopes and centuries of tradition shape daily life, this portrait stands as a celebration of childhood. Adorned in vibrant, shimmering traditional Kurdish attire that reflects her region's rich textile heritage, a young girl rests thoughtfully on a simple wooden swing suspended beneath ancient adobe arches and wooden beams. The scene captures the universal innocence and simple joy of youth—where play and quiet contemplation unfold naturally—showing culture not as a distant relic of history, but as an enduring, living heritage flourishing within the heart of the community.
