Mount Damavand Climbing Routes
Location
Mount Damavand is located in the Larijan district of Amol County, within the Alborz mountain range in northern Iran
1. Southern Route (Most Popular & Easiest)
Overview:
The Southern Route is the most popular and accessible path to the summit, making it ideal for first-time Damavand climbers.
Access Route:
Tehran → Haraz Road → Polour → Rineh → Goosfandsara → Bargah-e Sevom (Camp 3) → Summit
Features:
Well-defined hiking trails
Best shelter and accommodation facilities
Most frequently used climbing route
2. Northeastern Route (Most Scenic)
Overview:
Known for its breathtaking natural scenery, glaciers, and quieter atmosphere, this route is more technical than the Southern Route.
Starting Point:
Usually begins from Nandal Village.
Features:
Spectacular glacier views
Includes the Takht-e Fereydoun shelter
Less crowded and more adventurous
3. Western Route (Best Panoramic Views)
Overview:
This route offers stunning views of the Lar Plain and surrounding landscapes, with steeper and more demanding ascents than the Southern Route.
Starting Point:
Accessed from Polour via the Lar Plain road.
Features:
Beautiful panoramic scenery
Includes the Simorgh shelter
Moderate to challenging climb
4. Northern Route (Most Challenging)
Overview:
The Northern Route is considered the most difficult of the main Damavand routes and is recommended only for experienced mountaineers.

Crosses massive glaciers
Includes two high-altitude mountain refuges
Technically demanding and physically intense
